Reward Strategies 2

Thoughtful reward delivery, with consideration for place, time, and type of reward, can help or hinder progress in any training plan. Cooperative care is a unique application, because much of what we do requires our dogs to perform a station behaviour with stillness. Stillness, though, can feel like a pressure cooker!

How do we teach our dogs to hold their position, without crowding, worrying, or upsetting them? What do we do if our dogs flinch or shy away? How do we account for relieving that pressure without relying on relief as a reward?

This webinar will include discussion and demonstration of several specific strategies:

1. Freeze Frame: an errorless approach to stillness.

2. Click & Collect: recall to reward.

3. Hit the ‘Breaks’: letting off steam, relieving spatial pressure, and taking breaks.

Most of all, even husbandry training should be fun and simple! Knowing how and why to apply a given strategy will help you decide when to use it in your training. While each of these strategies will need adapting to your situation, this webinar will provide a blueprint to get started. Even if you aren't working on cooperative care right now, these strategies can be applied in many settings!
