Cooperative Care and Husbandry Foundations

FAQ

  • Is this for me?

Happy Husbandry is for everyone who wants to enjoy their relationship with their dog, even when they have to tackle the tough stuff together. You should already be willing to try positive dog training, but it's okay if you're still learning. This class is suitable for beginners, experienced positive reinforcement trainers, and crossover trainers.

  • What will I learn?

The theory part of this course describes good training mechanics: how dogs learn and why it might differ from what we're trying to teach them. The application part of the course focuses on how to use those mechanics to teach them what we really want them to learn! Throughout the course, you'll also get to see examples of successful management of "no-choice moments" and effective communication with pet professionals like groomers and veterinary staff.

  • I already know about Cooperative Care. Why should I take this course?

If you and your dog are comfortable with husbandry tasks, I'm glad to hear it. If you don't think you have anything left to learn, then this probably isn't the course for you.

  • Will I learn to do ____?

Maybe! I can't guarantee specific learning outcomes. Happy Husbandry One is a foundations course. It includes training plan examples for conditioning happy responses to husbandry tools and teaching stillness behaviours. You'll get demonstrations of body language and how to track it. I even explain how you might assess your own training - and I'm in the business of consulting! This class does not include detailed training plans for individual tasks, but I recommend mastering the skills in this class before addressing individual cooperative care tasks.

  • $80 seems too expensive or too cheap to be worth it...

My goal is to provide reasonably accessible, sound, and simple information to pet parents. There is a huge amount of learning material in this course, lovingly assembled by a qualified professional. There's also a huge amount of unsafe, unclear, and untrue advice floating around out there! While I couldn't possibly fit everything about cooperative care into one inexpensive course, I hope Happy Husbandry One can help inform pet parents and carers as they strive to make the best decisions they can for their pets.
